Episode 51: We Wear the Mask; Superheroes hiding their Blackness

Spawn is one of the most popular comic books featuring a Black hero in the modern era. However, Spawn’s alter ego Al Simmons is rarely seen in human form as a African American man.  McFarlane is on record explaining that he literally removed Simmon’s skin to ultimately remove the idea of race from readers minds.  This idea of “hiding” the ethnicity of character’s to readers is nothing new.  The comic industry has been hiding our Blackness for decades.  You’ll be surprised how deep this rabbit hole goes.  Enjoy!
