Farmhand #21

Written and illustrated Robert Guillory; Colored by Jean-Francois Beaulieu

Synopsis

Farmhand returns for its pulse-pounding final arc!  With Monica Thorne in complete control of Freetown, the surviving Jenkins family members prepare for their last stand.

Household names

With the success of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, comic book fans are hoping and praying for the film to be adapted into a comic book series.  I, on the other hand, would rather see indie horror comics such as Rob Guillory’s Farmhand escape comic book obscurity and become a household name like The Walking Dead or The Boys.

Guillory’s unique illustrations and Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s water based colors have created a world that is equal parts horror, action and intrigue — all the makings of a successful film or TV franchise.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.  We have yet to finish Farmhand’s epic tale.  Which brings us to issue 21, aptly titled “The Beginning of the End.”

Mythical Proportions

This issue picks up right where the last volume left us, with the death of our hero Zeke Jenkins by the hands of the story’s villain Monica Thorne.  The ominous tone sets up the long awaited stand off between Thorne and the Jenkins family, with Sergeant Andrea Jenkins leading the charge.

For newbies, this issue reminds me of watching soap operas with my mother — although you’ll be thoroughly entertained, newcomers will be badgering Guillory with a list of incessant questions.  Like, “why won’t Thorne kill Jedidiah? What’s so important about Zeke’s mother’s dead body?  Why do some of the “plant folks” in Freetown, Louisiana look bad, others look worse and some look downright disgusting.”  Some of these questions are part of Farmhand’s mystique; other answers can be found in previous volumes.

That being said, I would highly recommend that new readers immerse themselves in the previous volumes of Farmhand to fully appreciate the unfolding story. Because this is a series of mythical proportions, rich in history and underlying spirituality. A single issue will never do it justice.

For the sake of this review, however, all you need to know is IT’S. ABOUT. TO GO. DOWN.

Farmhand #21 debuts this Wednesday, May 7.

This book isn’t for newbies but previous volumes are binge worthy.
