In celebration of @kendricklamar Super Bowl Halftime show, I’d like to share 5 comic books from my archive that speaks TRUTH TO POWER just as he did this past Sunday.

Sports is Hell X @daygloayhole Ben Passmore (2020) eerily speaks directly to what we witnessed Sunday in a way that is profound and breathtaking.

Monkey Meat volume 1 (2022) X @juni.ba imagines a fantasy island built on the appropriation of culture for capitalist gain. (Look for volume 2 this March!)

Parable of the Sower X #OctaviaButler and reinterpreted by @johnjenningsart @damiand2duffy @amazingdavidbrame (2020) is set in 2024, predicted the horror of the LA fires, and foresaw our current political climate.

Birth of a Nation (2004) X #AaronMacgruder and @reggiehudlin #KyleBaker is a comedic and poignant urban fantasy where the inpoverished East St Louis secedes from the Union!

And lastly, Nat Turner (2005) X Kyle Baker which is beautifully rendered historical account of Nat Turner’s historic rebellion told completely without WORDS.

I’ve enjoyed each of these books with the same fervor and excitement I experienced during the Halftime Show.
